It has made me reflect on what a privilege it is to have a voice. His post has made me realize that listening requires not only my silence, it also requires that I have trust and belief in those that I am listening to. What I love the most from his post is this line: "Generosity of spirit, generosity of dialogue, generosity of justice, cannot be exclusive." - It is so easy to want to listen only to those who agree with me! I am resigned to work extra hard at listening to the dissenting voices in 2018 and trusting that my own personal growth is dependent on what they may (or may not) say. It is certainly a skill that I could improve upon. As you say, "I'm not learning if I do all the talking."

I read, a few days ago, a year-end reflection by a higher ed blogger, Sean Michael Morris. I admire the work that he does, and his perspective constantly reminds me of my own aspirations in the work I do in the classroom and with teachers. For this post, he has been asked to write about one wish he has for 2018. His response juxtaposes the humility of his privilege with the clear disappoints he has faced, that ultimately has shaped his beliefs and actions. At core, he acknowledges that it is precisely because of his privilege that he needs to be silent and to listen; to give others the opportunities he was given to find their voices. Here is his conclusion:

If I have a wish for the new year, it is not for my life to improve. It is that, through whatever power I have, I might improve the lives of others. This is what Digital Pedagogy Lab is for. This is why I write. This is why I teach. My voice pales in comparison to the cacophony of voices waiting to be heard. I want to hear them. And I believe we all will be better off if we let that cacophony rise.

If you'd like to read the whole post, you can find it here: http://www.seanmichaelmorris.com/and-so-i-am-grateful-too/

Sean's words resonate with me, as do yours. Thank you. I love the challenge of learning new technology and think it is a shame when people would rather settle with the familiar and not complicate their lives by learning new things. I've learned you can pretty much master most of today's new gadgets if giving up is not an option. Lorraine is a wonderful teacher and I know this, as she has taught me so much. Along with Lorraine my 10 year old grandson helped me grasp the functions of this iPad, which I am addicted to.
I have two sisters who have just joined the iPad circuit and I am happy to pass this knowledge onto them. That is what teaching is all about. Teachers, who are willing to accept new technology are an asset, as anything that helps students learn helps them grow in a fast changing world. Teachers pass on knowledge which is then passed on like a gift that keeps on giving.Myrnanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5284198838335292771.post-59453542757277656392014-06-19T14:57:49.831-07:002014-06-19T14:57:49.831-07:00LOL! Simply, yes, I ...Thanks for an EXCELLENT question. Simply, yes, I think we do try to teach too much Math too soon. We teach so many strands of Math, that it seems each year we end up re-teaching what was taught the year before because the kids only had a surface understanding and didn't therefore retain anything. We need to teach fewer expectations and work on deeper understanding, and yes, students need lots of practice for this to happen.
I think if the concepts are taught well-enough in the Elementary grades, students will be better-equipped to handle the high school Maths. I think it is important to teach most if not all of the Math that is currently being taught in high school not because the students necessarily need to know all of the concepts for future careers, but because they need to learn how to think. Math is logical and beautiful and you don't need to be a mathematician to develop a mathematical mind. Here's a question for you -- do we try to teach too much Math too soon? Might we be better off reducing the content in order to allow for better pedagogy and more repetition and confidence building among students?

In particular it puzzles me how much Math we attempt to teach everybody. My high school Math was far more advanced than was ever ultimately required either in my other subjects or my career. Sure, those who ended up taking Engineering or Physics would have needed it, but teaching all of it to all of us was kind of like making everybody take high level gymnastics in gym class because some of us were going to the Olympics or would end up working in the circus.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5284198838335292771.post-56280503962564889812013-11-06T19:47:42.101-08:002013-11-06T19:47:42.101-08:00Excellent post about the struggles of using data w...Excellent post about the struggles of using data when it results in labels. It should be information to guide us, not a label to defeat us. It sounds like your school uses formative assessments to mostly guide instructional strategies; and that always means we meet the kids where they are to guide them to the possible. That is often not reflected on standardized test scores. Thanks as always for your informative, reflective post.Sheri42https://www.blogger.com/profile/06110059329788147499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5284198838335292771.post-52946988314132154812013-09-17T17:58:16.095-07:002013-09-17T17:58:16.095-07:00Technology should really be used responsibly to pr...Technology should really be used responsibly to prevent disadvantages.Australian broadband service providerhttp://www.vinternet.com.au/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5284198838335292771.post-59922769889252916722013-09-17T06:36:35.604-07:002013-09-17T06:36:35.604-07:00I'm awed. Going to let it curate and then I might write a post about it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZEZTyxSl3g
I don't understand why everyone doesn't take on a "learning stance". But I think it has something to do with seeing the need to develop into "self-evolving learners" the way Lichtman describes.
I know the mantra is always "go with the goers", and I will, it's just that I know the "goers" are going to get there one way or another anyway; that makes me feel superfluous.
It is those challenging ones, those that believe "Old School is the best school", those who say they are "not comfortable" with change that I want to make a difference with. I've come to believe that the vast majority of educators out there do what they do because they care very much about their students and believe what they are doing is in their students' best interest.
I will blog along the way...
LorraineAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11030713811700962791noreply@blogger.com
